“Pragma helped us ship Lost Rift by allowing us to easily create scalable online services that are tailored to the specific needs of our project. The support from the Pragma team, from onboarding the project to shipping, meant that we were able to quickly and effectively deliver a smooth launch.” - Clifford Roche, Project Technical Lead at People Can Fly

Overview & Select Results

With Pragma powering the foundation, People Can Fly launched Lost Rift on an infrastructure built for scale, resilience, and creative freedom. Matchmaking, player data, and live-ops run reliably in the background, giving the team confidence that their most ambitious systems from high-stakes PvPvE missions to evolving survival hubs will perform under pressure. More importantly, Pragma’s partnership allows People Can Fly to focus on what matters most: crafting unforgettable player experiences and delivering a living, ever-expanding world that will thrive for years to come.

About People Can Fly & Lost Rift

Since its debut with Painkiller in 2004, People Can Fly (PCF) has evolved from a pioneer of Polish game development into a global studio and industry-leading Unreal Engine expert - contributing to Gears of War titles, creating Bulletstorm, lending its expertise to Fortnite, and releasing Outriders with Square Enix in 2021. As PCF expanded its ambitions into self-publishing and live-service, multiplayer games, the team recognized the need for a unified, flexible backend infrastructure that could scale across titles. Their choice: Pragma Engine.

Lost Rift is a bold hybrid: a first-person survival-shooter that weaves together base building, PvE campaign progression, open-world crafting, and intense co-op PvPvE extraction missions with up to five in a team.

On each extraction mission, teams race under a time constraint to loot, manage risk from both environment and adversaries, and make it to the exit. Meanwhile, in the shared hub, players build camps, trade, craft, and prepare for future runs.

Pragma Capability

Impact for Lost Rift

Players Camp & Extractions

Pragma’s game loop allows PCF to have different behaviours depending on the game’s needs.

Players can join their friends and experience PvE content together in their Camp and go on expeditions and experience PvPvE content

Matchmaking

Pragma’s matchmaking subsystem is modular and customizable.

PCF can define custom matchmaking rules tailored to extraction missions (region-balancing, latency boundaries, team sizes) rather than depending on a “one-size-fits-all” solution.

Player accounts & cross-platform identity

Pragma supports cross-platform accounts and unified identity services.

Players can persist their inventory, progress, and social data seamlessly.

Player & game data

Pragma offers a full player data service (progress, inventory, stats) that integrates with custom game loops.

All crafting, loot, and base-building states are reliably stored and synchronized across the network.

Live ops & deployment

Pragma’s live operations tooling, real-time monitoring, and feature rollout pipelines allow dynamic content updates.

PCF can push mission tweaks, balance patches, seasonal events, and emergency hotfixes with confidence.

Scalability & robust infrastructure

Pragma has been load-tested for up to 1 million concurrent users on AWS.

As Lost Rift grows or hits peaks, Pragma’s backend can support expansion without major reengineering.
